Postpartum and Newborn Care
Our care for you and your newborn doesn’t stop after you go home. While our CNM scope of practice includes newborn care for the first 28 days of life, we strongly encourage all our families to establish care with a pediatric provider and to bring their newborn in for his or her first appointment as recommended by that provider.
Our standard postpartum care and newborn care offerings include:
-
Return to the Birth Center at 24-48hrs postpartum for a check in for both mom and baby, as well as your baby’s initial newborn screenings (hearing screen, newborn metabolic screening, cardiac screening, jaundice screening, and weight check).
-
Additional newborn weight checks and lactation support as needed.
-
24-hour access to an on-call midwife for any postpartum concerns (we encourage families to contact their pediatric provider for newborn concerns when able)
-
2 week and 6-week postpartum visit for postpartum moms.
-
Initiation of any desired birth control including diaphragms, medications, and insertion of IUDs or Nexplanon. We are also happy to provide education on non hormonal methods of pregnancy prevention.
-
Referrals to additional resources as needed such as mental health support and physical therapy.
Of course, the postpartum period doesn’t end at 6 weeks! We are happy to see you for any additional women’s health needs, as our scope of practice also includes well woman care.
