Certified Nurse-Midwives are independent healthcare providers who care for women through all stages of life, just like an Ob\/Gyn. However, we differ in philosophy and scope of practice. As midwives, we view pregnancy and women\u2019s health as normal, physiologic processes. Our care is holistic and focuses on the unique needs of each individual and their family. We tend to spend more time with our patients and have a deeper emphasis on education and shared decision-making. During labor and birth, we provide hands-on support to our patients, using many different comfort measures. Unlike Ob\/Gyns, we do not do surgery. So, we will refer you to a physician if you need a cesarean birth or other surgery. Certified Nurse Midwives are different from Licensed Midwives, who only deliver out of hospital and tend to have a narrower scope of practice.<\/p>\n

Absolutely. We believe that everyone has the right to prenatal and birth care that aligns with their hopes and values. Before transferring care, we recommend scheduling a free meet and greet to confirm that you meet our \u201clow risk\u201d criteria for birth center care. Even if you are not eligible for the birth center, you may still be able to transfer to the Roots Midwives for a planned hospital delivery. If you are considering a transfer, we encourage calling sooner rather than later, to allow us plenty of time to determine your eligibility and orient you to the birth center setting, as well as give you time to get to know each member of our midwifery team.<\/p>\n

At Roots Birth and Women\u2019s Health, we have a team-based approach to prenatal and birth care. We always have 2 midwives on call, one for the hospital and one for the birth center. We encourage you to rotate through the midwives during prenatal care, as you do not have control over who is on call when you go into labor. In addition to your midwife, a nurse or birth assistant will be present for your baby\u2019s birth and then remain with you at the birth center until you are ready to go home.<\/p>\n
